CPS Technologies Corporation has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from the US Navy Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) to develop novel metal matrix composites (MMCs) for thermal energy storage applications. CPS will leverage our current MMC processing expertise to design and fabricate Aluminum-phase change material (PCM) composites. The unique PCM MMC materials will absorb thermal energy generated by shipboard electronics, allowing for reusable and reliable operation.
CPS MMCs are already utilized as lightweight, dimensionally stable, high thermal conductivity materials for a variety of thermal management systems. Through this program, we will demonstrate that the same reduced size, weight, and power (SWaP) benefits provided by CPS MMCs can be transferred to thermal energy storage applications. CPS will replace legacy systems used in current Naval applications, reducing their overall footprint by greater than 50%.
Phase I of this contract will be conducted over a base period of performance of six months and is for $140,000, with a potential 6 month, $100,000 option phase.
